11 day Kenya Safari
Itinerary Overview
First, the earth shakes under hooves. Then, the mountain touches the clouds. Finally, the ocean washes it all away. This is Kenya at its most iconic – lions on golden plains, elephants with Kilimanjaro behind them, and the soft, salty breeze of the Swahili coast. Eleven days of wild and wonder. You’ll arrive a traveler and leave with Africa under your skin.
- The Great Migration (seasonal); witness the greatest wildlife show on earth in Maasai Mara
- Elephants with Kilimanjaro; that postcard view in Amboseli, where tuskers roam below Africa's highest peak
- Elephants with Kilimanjaro; that postcard view in Amboseli, where tuskers roam below Africa's highest peak
- White sand, turquoise water; three days on Diani or Mombasa beaches, where time slows to a gentle sway
- Nairobi's rhythm; from the giraffes at AFEW Giraffe Centre to the soul of the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
- Maasai village visit; jumping warriors, beadwork, and stories shared under acacia trees
DAY 1
Arrival → Nairobi, the Green City in the Sun
You land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Your Agaca Tours guide is waiting; warm smile, steady eyes. A short drive to your hotel. The air smells of jacaranda and diesel. You’re in the beating heart of East Africa. Settle in, rest, and dream of the wild ahead.
DAY 2
Nairobi → Maasai Mara; Into the Infinite Grass
After breakfast, you fly or drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve (a scenic flight saves time; a road trip offers village views). By midday, you’re on the plains; and they are endless. Lions laze under bushes, zebras stripe the horizon. Your first game drive takes you to the edge of the Mara River, where hippos groan and crocodiles wait. Tonight, your tented camp hums with the sounds of the bush.
DAY 3
Maasai Mara →The Rhythm of the Migration
Wake before dawn. Balloon safari optional; but the real magic is on the ground. You spend a full day tracking the Great Migration (July–October). The wildebeest stretch to the horizon, their hooves a low thunder. You watch a river crossing; chaos and courage, life and death. Picnic lunch under a solitary acacia. Afternoon game drive for predators: cheetahs on termite mounds, leopards in fig trees. Return to camp as the sun bleeds orange. You’ll sleep deeply.
DAY 4
Maasai Mara → Lions, Leopards, and Maasai Smiles
Another day in the Mara; because one day is never enough. Morning game drive for the cats you missed. Then visit a Maasai village. The warriors jump, the women sing, and an elder welcomes you with a hand on your shoulder. You’ll learn how they live alongside lions; a balance of bravery and respect. Afternoon at leisure or another game drive. Tonight, a sundowner on the plains; drink in hand, sky on fire.
DAY 5
Maasai Mara → Amboseli – The Mountain Appears
After breakfast, you drive to Amboseli National Park (or fly via Nairobi). The landscape changes – from rolling savannah to dusty plains. And then you see it: Mount Kilimanjaro, floating above the clouds like a forgotten world. Check into your lodge, facing the mountain. Afternoon game drive: elephants herds marching in single file, their tusks white against dry grass. Sunset paints Kili pink and gold. You won’t need words.
DAY 6
Amboseli → Giants and Swamps
Wake early. Kilimanjaro is often clearest at dawn; grab your camera. You spend the day exploring Amboseli’s swamps, where elephants cool themselves in front of Africa’s highest peak. The birdlife is spectacular; flamingos, pelicans, crowned cranes. A visit to a local Maasai community or a guided nature walk. Afternoon at leisure. Tonight, sit outside your lodge and stare at the mountain. Some silences need no filling.
DAY 7
Amboseli → Coast; From Dust to Turquoise
After breakfast, you fly from Amboseli to Mombasa or Ukunda airstrip (near Diani). The transformation is sudden: from dry savannah to humid, coconut-scented air. You transfer to your beach resort on Diani Beach; white sand, turquoise water, gentle waves. Check in, kick off your shoes. After weeks of dust and dawns, you step into the Indian Ocean. The salt water kisses your tired legs. This is your reward.
DAY 8
Diani/Mombasa Beach → Your Day. Your Tide.
No alarms. No game drives. Just you and the ocean.
Snorkel or dive: Kisite Marine National Park is a reef of turtles and technicolor fish.
Sunset dhow cruise: a traditional wooden boat, a Swahili captain, and the sky melting into the sea.
Explore Mombasa: Old Town, Fort Jesus, spice markets (optional day trip).
Simply sleep: on a lounger, with a coconut in your hand and a novel in your lap.
Tonight, a seafood dinner on the beach. Your toes in the sand. Your heart full.
DAY 9
Diani/Mombasa Beach – Deeper Still
Another day to unwind – because rest is not wasted time. Try kitesurfing (Diani is world‑famous for it), visit the Wasini Island for dolphin spotting, or take a Swahili cooking class – learn to make coconut-infused pilau. Late afternoon: walk the endless beach, collecting shells and memories. Sunset swim. Then a final beach bonfire, sharing stories with fellow travelers. This is the coast that poets write about.
DAY 10
Coast → Nairobi; The Circle Closes
After breakfast, you fly back to Nairobi. Check into a city hotel. Afternoon at leisure: visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see orphaned elephants at feeding time (heart‑melting), then the AFEW Giraffe Centre; where Rothschild giraffes kiss pellets from your lips. Evening: farewell dinner at Carnivore restaurant (or a quiet spot of your choosing). Nairobi shows you its warm, chaotic, beautiful heart one last time.
DAY 11
Nairobi → The Long Goodbye
One last African breakfast. Perhaps last‑minute shopping at Maasai Market for beadwork and carvings. Then your guide drives you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. He hugs you goodbye. You carry lion roars, elephant silhouettes, Kilimanjaro’s shadow, and the salt of the Indian Ocean in your chest. And you whisper: “I’ll be back.”
