DAY 1
Arrival → Volcanoes National Park → Into the Virunga Mist
You land at Kigali International Airport. Your Agaca Tours guide is waiting warm smile, steady eyes. The drive north winds through Rwanda’s legendary hills, terraced like green prayer beads. In approximately 2.5 hours, you arrive at your lodge.
Choose your sanctuary:
Bisate Lodge borders the famous Volcanoes National Park, where Dr. Dian Fossey conducted her famed research. This isn’t just another gorilla lodge it’s a 176‑acre conservation project where reforestation efforts have transformed former farmland back into pristine forest. Between gorilla treks, days unfold with guided reforestation walks or simply watching the mist roll across impossible volcanic peaks from your private deck.
Singita Kwitonda Lodge sits on 178 unspoiled acres on the edge of the park, offering private heated plunge pools, wellness treatment areas, and in‑ and outdoor fireplaces each suite framed by breathtaking views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes.
Settle in. The forest breathes beside you. Tonight, sleep comes with dreams of silverbacks.
DAY 2
Volcanoes National Park → The Day Everything Changes
Wake before dawn. Your heart is already pounding. After a light breakfast, you transfer to park headquarters, where you are assigned to a gorilla family. Then you step into the mist‑covered jungle the same ancient forests where Dian Fossey walked.
The trek could be two hours or five but every step builds the story. The air is thick with earth and moss. The tracker’s radio crackles. Your guide whispers, “They’re close.” You push through the last leaves. And there he is a silverback, chewing a thistle, looking up as if he’s been expecting you.
For one sacred hour, you watch mothers groom, babies tumble, and the great male hold his kingdom. You return to your lodge walking on air, forever changed.
Afternoon at leisure: soak in your private plunge pool, take a guided reforestation walk, or simply stare at the volcanoes.
DAY 3
Volcanoes National Park → The Twin Lakes → Kigali → The Long Goodbye
One last African sunrise over the Virunga peaks. After breakfast, you drive to the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, formed centuries ago by volcanic lava flows.
Here, you embark on a peaceful boat cruise gliding past small islands, fishermen casting nets, and children waving from shore. The lakes, along with the adjacent Rugezi Swamp, form one of Rwanda’s seven Important Birding Areas, perfect for bird lovers and photographers alike. A short guided nature hike leads you to panoramic viewpoints that showcase the sparkling waters framed by the Virunga volcanoes.
Then the drive back to Kigali. The hills roll past, but your mind is still in that misty forest and on those mirror waters. At the airport, your guide hugs you goodbye. You carry silverback eyes and volcanic peaks in your chest. And you whisper: “I will return.”
