7 Day Rwanda safari

Itinerary Overview

Small country. Enormous heart. In just one week, you’ll trek to meet mountain gorillas in the mist, search for chimpanzees in ancient rainforests, spot the Big Five on rolling savannahs, and float on one of Africa’s deepest lakes. Rwanda will surprise you; its green hills, its warm smiles, its quiet resilience. This is not a drive-through safari. It’s a feeling that stays.

DAY 1

Arrival → Kigali, the Clean Heart
You land at Kigali International Airport. Your Agaca Tours guide is waiting; warm smile, steady welcome. A short drive through the city’s immaculate streets, lined with purple jacarandas. You check into your hotel, but first, a gentle introduction: a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It’s heavy, but essential; a lesson in how a nation chose forgiveness over revenge. Evening at leisure. Tomorrow, the wild calls.

DAY 2

Arrival → Kigali, the Clean Heart
You land at Kigali International Airport. Your Agaca Tours guide is waiting; warm smile, steady welcome. A short drive through the city’s immaculate streets, lined with purple jacarandas. You check into your hotel, but first, a gentle introduction: a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It’s heavy, but essential; a lesson in how a nation chose forgiveness over revenge. Evening at leisure. Tomorrow, the wild calls.

DAY 3

Volcanoes → The Day You Meet a Gorilla
Wake before dawn. Your heart is already racing. After briefing at park headquarters, you trek into the bamboo forest. The trackers have located your gorilla family; the Sabyinyo, the Amahoro, or the famous Susa group. You climb through nettles and mist. Then the radio crackles. Your guide whispers, “They’re close.” You part the leaves. A silverback looks up, chewing a thistle. For one sacred hour, you watch mothers groom, babies tumble, and the great male hold his kingdom. No words. Just tears and wonder. You return to your lodge walking on air. Afternoon rest; you’ve earned it.

DAY 4

Volcanoes → Lake Kivu; Mountains to Mirror
After a relaxed breakfast, you drive to Lake Kivu; one of Africa’s Great Lakes, deep and clear and safe to swim. The route winds through tea plantations and eucalyptus forests. By early afternoon, you arrive in Rubavu (Gisenyi) or Karongi, where the lake spreads out like polished pewter. Settle into a lakeside lodge. In the late afternoon, a boat cruise. You visit Napoleon Island (yes, it looks like a hat) or simply drift on calm water. Sunset over the lake; the sky catches fire, and the lake reflects every shade. Tonight, dine on fresh tilapia. Your soul begins to untangle.

DAY 5

Lake Kivu → Nyungwe Forest; Primates and Canopies
Morning on the lake; another swim, another sunrise. Then drive south to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. The road climbs into thick, misty jungle. Check into your forest lodge. Afternoon: the famous Canopy Walk; suspended 70 meters above the ground, walking among treetops. You see monkeys swinging below, birds calling from hidden perches. It’s like floating in another world. Tonight, the forest hums with insect songs and the distant call of a great blue turaco.

DAY 6

Nyungwe → Chimp Trekking in the Ancient Rainforest
Before dawn, you wake for chimpanzee trekking. Your guide leads you into the dense, dripping forest. You listen for their calls. Then you hear it; a rising scream that builds to a chorus. You follow the sounds down muddy trails. And there they are: chimpanzees grooming, playing, a mother carrying her infant. For one hour, you share their world. Afternoon optional: a hike to one of Nyungwe’s waterfalls or a guided birding walk (the forest has over 300 species). Then drive toward Akagera; or rest and depart early the next morning.

(Alternate Day 6 layout to fit 7 days: After chimp trekking, drive partway toward Akagera and overnight at a lodge near the park.)

DAY 7

Nyungwe → Akagera → Kigali → Savannah Finale
Option A (if time allows – early start): Drive to Akagera National Park for a morning game drive. This is Rwanda’s hidden savannah gem; lions reintroduced, rhinos protected, elephants roaming the lakeshores. You spot zebras, giraffes, maybe a leopard. Then drive back to Kigali (3-4 hours), a farewell lunch, and transfer to the airport.
Option B (more relaxed): Drive directly from Nyungwe to Kigali (4-5 hours), with a late afternoon city tour; visit the Caplaki Craft Village for souvenirs, then a farewell dinner overlooking the hills. Save Akagera for a longer safari next time.
