14 Day Tanzania safari

Itinerary Overview

First, the land shakes with hooves. Then, the crater holds its breath. Finally, the ocean sings you to sleep. This is Tanzania at its most epic the Great Migration thundering across golden plains, the Ngorongoro Crater teeming with life, the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds, and the spice‑scented alleys of Zanzibar. Fourteen days. Four worlds. One unforgettable heartbeat.

DAY 1

Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
You land near Arusha, with Mount Kilimanjaro greeting you through the terminal windows – if the clouds part. Your Agaca Tours guide is waiting with a warm smile and a sign. A short drive to your lodge on the outskirts of Arusha. The air is cool, scented with coffee and woodsmoke. Settle in. Tomorrow, the wild begins.

DAY 2

Arusha → Ngorongoro Crater → The Lost World
After breakfast, you drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs through Maasai villages and acacia woodlands. By midday, you stand on the crater rim 600 meters below, a lost world sprawls. You descend to the crater floor for an afternoon game drive. Lions nap in the open, elephants glide through yellow‑barked acacias, and flamingos dot the soda lake. Hippos grunt in the shallows. You might spot the endangered black rhino a rare gift. As the sun sinks, you climb back to your lodge on the rim. The silence of the caldera stays with you.

DAY 3

Ngorongoro → Serengeti (Central/Seronera) → Into the Endless Plains
Morning at leisure; perhaps another crater rim walk. Then you drive into the Serengeti. The word means “endless plain” in Maasai, and you’ll understand why. As far as your eyes can see: golden grass, rocky kopjes, and the distant shimmer of heat. En route, game drives reveal zebras, wildebeest, giraffes. You arrive at your tented camp in time for sunset. Tonight, the bush sings you to sleep; hyenas whoop, lions cough in the distance.

DAY 4

Serengeti (Central) → The Rhythm of the Migration
Full day in central Serengeti. You wake before dawn, coffee in hand, and set out as the sun paints the plains orange. The great wildebeest and zebra herds are everywhere (seasonal – June to October often near river crossings; November to May in the south). You watch a river crossing; the dust, the panic, the courage. Picnic under a solitary acacia. Afternoon game drive for predators: cheetahs on termite mounds, leopards in sausage trees, lions with full bellies. Return to camp as the sky bleeds red. You’ll sleep deeply.

DAY 5

Serengeti (Northern Corridor or Ndutu → Seasonal)
Depending on the season, you head north (July–October for Mara River crossings) or south (December–March for calving season). If northern Serengeti: you drive to the Mara River, where thousands of wildebeest gather at the edge, crocodiles waiting below. If southern Serengeti (Ndutu plains): you witness the calving; baby wildebeest taking their first wobbling steps, and the predators that follow. Whichever season, this day is raw, wild, and unforgettable. Overnight in a mobile camp or lodge in that region.

DAY 6

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Highlands → A Final Roar
Morning game drive in the Serengeti; one last chance for the cat you missed. Then you drive back to the Ngorongoro highlands, stopping at Olduvai Gorge, the “Cradle of Mankind,” where the Leakey family uncovered early hominid fossils. You stand where humanity’s first steps were taken. Overnight at a lodge on the crater rim or in the highlands. Sunset over the caldera; quiet, holy.

DAY 7

Ngorongoro → Arusha → Moshi → Kilimanjaro at Last
Drive back to Arusha, where you can freshen up and have lunch. Then continue to Moshi, the gateway to Kilimanjaro. Your lodge or hotel faces the mountain; if the clouds cooperate, you’ll see its snowy peak floating above the banana groves. Afternoon optional: a foot of Kilimanjaro trek (easy hike through rainforest to a waterfall) or a visit to a coffee plantation on the mountain’s slopes. Tonight, you sleep in the shadow of Africa’s roof.

DAY 8

Moshi → Kilimanjaro Day (Choose Your Adventure)
Three options, depending on your energy and dreams:

  • Option A (Full Trek down – for hikers): A one‑day trek to Mandara Hut (2,700m) – through lush rainforest, with views of the peak if clear. About 5‑6 hours round trip.

  • Option B (Half Day Experience): A guided nature walk on the lower slopes, visiting a Chagga village, a waterfall, and underground caves used as shelters during tribal wars.

  • Option C (Pure Gaze): Stay at your lodge with a pool and a book, sipping Kilimanjaro coffee while the mountain shows off. No shame – sometimes rest is the real adventure.
Evening: farewell dinner in Moshi with live Taarab music.

DAY 9

Moshi/Kilimanjaro → Zanzibar → From Mountain to Ocean
After breakfast, you transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and fly to Zanzibar (1.5 hours – book separately or included). As you descend, the turquoise reefs appear. You land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Your Zanzibar guide meets you and transfers you to your beach resort; on the northeast coast (Pongwe, Kiwengwa) or east (Jambiani) for powder‑white sand. Check in, kick off your shoes. Step into the warm Indian Ocean. This is your reward.

DAY 10

Zanzibar → Stone Town’s Labyrinth
After breakfast, you drive to Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar. A walking tour through narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and spice‑scented markets. Visit the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Freddie Mercury House (he was born here). Then the poignant Slave Market Memorial; a sobering reminder of the island’s past. Lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the dhows. Afternoon at leisure bargain in the market, sip fresh sugar cane juice, or simply soak in the chaos. Late afternoon, you return to your beach resort.

DAY 11

Zanzibar → Spice & Swahili
A morning spice tour; you’ll taste fresh nutmeg, see vanilla orchids, and learn how cloves built an empire. A local farmer leads you through his plantation, and you end with a Swahili lunch prepared from the spices you’ve picked. Afternoon optional: visit Prison Island (Giant Tortoises) or Nakupenda Sandbank (a sandbar that disappears at high tide;  pure magic). Sunset dhow cruise; a traditional wooden boat, a glass of wine, and the sky melting into the sea.

DAY 12

Zanzibar → Beach Day. Your Tide.
No alarms. No itineraries. This day belongs to you.

  • Snorkel the Mnemba Atoll; dolphins, turtles, technicolor fish.

  • Kitesurf at Paje; world‑class wind and warm water.

  • Take a Swahili cooking class; learn to make coconut pilau and octopus curry.

  • Simply do nothing; float in the pool, walk the endless beach, read a novel.
Tonight, a seafood feast on the sand. Your toes in the water, your heart full.

DAY 13

Zanzibar → Choose Your Last Magic
One more day to fall deeper in love with the island.

  • Jozani Forest; see the rare red colobus monkeys, found only here.

  • Blue Safari; a full‑day trip to a sandbank, snorkeling, and a seafood lunch on a remote island.

  • Stone Town by night; the market lights up, and the night food stalls offer Zanzibar pizza and grilled lobster.
Tonight, a final sunset walk. You’ll whisper, “I’m not ready to leave.”

DAY 14

Zanzibar → Home → The Long Goodbye
One last African sunrise over the Indian Ocean. Breakfast with the sound of waves. Then your driver takes you to the airport. You carry the roar of the Serengeti, the silence of the crater, the gaze of Kilimanjaro, and the salt of Zanzibar in your chest. And you know: this was not a vacation. This was a homecoming.
